How House Calls Can Support Elders With Dementia & Alzheimer’s

If your loved ones are living with dementia or Alzheimer’s, they may be able to benefit from house calls from AIM Group in New York.

What Is Dementia?

Dementia is a broad term used to describe a decline in cognitive function that impairs the ability to remember, think, or make decisions that interfere with daily activities. It is not a normal part of aging, though it is more common among older adults. In 2014, around 5 million adults aged 65 and older had dementia, and this number is projected to rise to almost 14 million by 2060.

  • Dementia is a general term that can cause different symptoms in different people. Those affected may have difficulty with memory, attention, communication, reasoning, judgment, problem solving, and even visual perception, beyond normal vision changes that come with age.

  • Signs that could indicate dementia include getting lost in a familiar place, using odd words to describe familiar things, not being able to remember the names of close friends and family, not being able to recall past memories, and not being able to do tasks independently.

  • Amongst the different risk factors, age is the strongest known risk factor for dementia, usually affecting those aged 65 and over. Those with parents or siblings with dementia are more likely to develop it themselves. Poor heart health, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking, can increase the risk of dementia if left untreated. Head injuries, particularly if they are severe or occur multiple times, can also increase the risk of dementia.

What Is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is the most prevalent form of dementia, affecting between 60 and 80 percent of all cases. It is characterized by changes in the brain that lead to difficulty remembering recent events, such as a conversation held minutes or hours ago, with more distant memories being forgotten later on. Other symptoms, such as difficulty walking, speaking, or behavioral changes, can appear further along in the disease. The greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s is having a first-degree relative with the condition, which increases the chances of developing it by 10 to 30 percent.

How Can The Elderly Benefit From Medical House Calls?

The elderly can benefit greatly from in-home medical care. It can help keep them out of hospitals, emergency rooms, and nursing homes. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) reports that over one million elderly Americans are completely homebound, and another 2-3 million are disabled enough that they cannot make it to the doctor’s office. Even those who are not completely homebound may put off visiting the primary care doctor due to the difficulty of the task. This can lead to their condition worsening, and the cost of treatment becoming higher.

In-home care for the elderly gives patients the opportunity to receive personalized, customized treatment in the comfort of their own home, as opposed to receiving brief care from a doctor or hospital. This can also provide peace of mind for both patients and their loved ones. Additionally, in-home care reduces the frequency of hospitalizations and ER visits, and also provides those who live far from medical offices the chance to receive routine care.
